Grenade key assignments?

Grenade key assignments?

I'm sure there's lots of wonderful stuff to work on to improve the game, and I appreciate what's been done so far. But I have one hope that seems like it would be simple to implement, and which would go farther than any other feature I can image in improving my experience: Let the key presses for activating the grenade launcher be completely distinct from those that select throwable grenades.

Currently, it's an absurd mess. The "3" and "G" buttons do exactly the same thing - they either pull out a throwable grenade or activate the launcher. It's not possible to know which will happen until you press the key. If it's not the desired result, you have to press it again, each time waiting for the animation to complete before being able to try again. Worse, the game might decide to offer a smoke grenade instead - a function which does have its own dedicated key.

I can think of absolutely no way in which this UI design is useful or authentic. It's deeply frustrating in the moment. Every single game, every single time I try to activate either weapon, it's a crap shoot. Who knows what object my character will pull from his pocket when I press a button? And meanwhile, he's under fire, unable to issue orders or fire the rifle. This is - and I'm not exaggerating here - the single most common reason for my character's death when I'm playing. And from an authenticity perspective, it's ridiculous! How would a marine accidentally activate his grenade launcher when he meant to fish a grenade out of a pocket?

It seems like it could be such a simple fix! There are already three distinct buttons for three distinct tools. Just assign one tool to each button! There's simply no reason for any key press to be associated with activating, at random, one of two different grenade types, requiring a second key press if the first one didn't get you what you wanted. I'm pulling my hair out trying to understand what this UI could possibly serve other than unnecessarily adding frustration to the player experience.

This is my humble request. Or - barring that - I'd love an explanation of why the current system is acceptable and what I'm doing wrong. Thank you!
